Vintage-inspired diamond rings have become increasingly popular over the last couples of years.
A revival in art deco and antique design has led to more ornate, distinctive rings – presumably with the aim to stand out from the crowd. Some of our favorite celebrity vintage engagement rings are admired not simply because of their large carat weight, but because their styles are so unusual.
Here are some of the most striking and noteworthy.
We should have known that Justin Timberlake wasn’t going to propose with a conventional engagement ring. A cushion-cut diamond set in blackened platinum, the center stone is surrounded by a double diamond halo and two blue gemstones, Timberlake chose the design himself – with no input from his partner. “He has better taste than I do,” she insisted.
If there is another celebrity engagement ring that better suits its wearer than this one, we’ve yet to hear about it. Choreographer Benjam Millepied met Natalie Portman when they were making Black Swan, and they were soon in love. Portman – a socially conscious vegan – wears this Jamie Wolf double halo engagement ring made from recycled platinum and eco-friendly diamonds. A vintage design with modern values suits both Portman’s classic style and her politically aware personality.
John Krasinski proposed to Emily Blunt in 2008 with this stunning Edwardian-inspired ring, designed by Neil Lane. A three-carat round diamond stone is flanked by baguettes, while the platinum band features vintage milgrain detailing. It’s a perfect fit for the British beauty.
With its rustic style, Anna Paquin’s engagement ring from True Blood costar Stephen Meyer is truly unique. The center stone looks to be possibly a champagne diamond or moonstone, with a platinum or white gold band that has been finished with black rhodium plating. A twisted, floral band enhances the antique appeal.
Emerald-cut diamonds bring a very different look as opposed to the more classic round, but have their own vintage vibe. Kristen Bell’s three-carat fancy colored center diamond is set in platinum, with smaller side diamonds that add delicate sparkle. Kristen married Dax Shepard October 17th; she asked him to marry her on Twitter, after the Defense of Marriage Act fell earlier in 2013.
While Pete Campbell is the Mad Men character everyone loves to hate, we were happy to hear that his onscreen love interest is now his betrothed in real life! Vincent Kartheiser popped the question in March 2013 with a hexagonal engagement ring, featuring intricate scrolling detail around the sides of the diamond.
When we heard Francois-Henri Pinault had proposed to Salma Hayek, we knew the ring would be spectacular (Pinault is the CEO of Kering, parent company of Saint Laurent Paris, Gucci and many more). He didn’t disappoint, with a five-carat oval-cut diamond, flanked by trillion diamonds in a French-set platinum band.
