The fashion industry’s single-minded obsession with smaller sizes has transformed in recent years, especially since the average American woman wears a size 14 dress.
According to Marie Denee, who wears a size 16 and studies the industry via her website TheCurvyFashionista.com: “There is still an interesting stigma attached to plus-size fashion and the woman who wears it. Many think ‘Oh, she doesn’t want to draw attention, live life, date, be confident, wear fitted clothes with bold colors and patterns,’ when the exact opposite is true.”
In the past, many bridal stores would cater to a size 6 and not carry bridal gown samples in plus sizes. But this is rapidly changing as more and more bridal fashion designers are creating designs for plus-size brides, including sexy lingerie for plus-size brides.
As we featured recently in 6 wedding dress do’s and don’ts for plus-size silhouettes, plus-size wedding dresses have definitely entered the mainstream of the wedding fashion world.
APW (A Practical Wedding) has recently announced its own plus-size wedding dress boutique.
Here is the information you need to get gorgeous plus size wedding dresses, from A Practical Wedding:
When we announced our new APW Dress Boutiques the other week, the response was overwhelming. But there was one item missing: a plus size dress boutique. Originally our plans were that plus size dresses would be intermingled with the rest of the dresses and sorted by price. But after your (smart, awesome) feedback, it became clear to us that doing it that way was a waste of your time. Because thanks to the fashion industry for refusing to model most plus-size dresses on actual plus-size women, we were going to have to click on every dress in the store in order to figure out which ones were available in a broader range of sizes. Boo.
BRINGING IT, FOR SIZE 14 AND UP
Today I’m delighted to announce a brand new Plus-Size Boutique in the APW Dress Boutiques. Here’s what you can expect from this shop:
- Dresses in a range of sizes, from 14–24 (and up if available). And we promise not to put just a bunch of size 14 dresses in there and call it a day.
- Dresses priced up to $2,000 (though most of them are closer to the $500 and under range).
- Dresses that meet the same standard of style (um, hot) as the rest of our boutiques.
NOW IF THE FASHION INDUSTRY COULD ALSO BRING IT?
The fashion industry has not fully caught up to the fact that plus-size women have just as much interest in fancy dresses (that don’t suck) as everyone else. Maybe even more interest. But we get it. So even though the landscape isn’t as robust with options as we’d like, we’re still scouring to find you the best there is available. Just click here for weekly updates with the newest inventory from around the web.
And if you’ve got a lead on a hot plus-size wedding dress, just head over to our Facebook page and post a link there. It may just end up in our boutique (or better yet, on someone’s back).
THE BEST OF THE REST…
And for all you ladies not looking for plus-size dresses, remember to check out our other boutiques:
We update them pretty much daily, because… wedding dress shopping, y’all. It’s the best—particularly when you’re pretending. Happy dress (and occasional pants) browsing.
