People have been enjoying hookahs since the 15th century. It was once a status symbol, a pastime performed by royalty and boisterous personalities.
Sounds like something you need to get in on, huh?
Once you’ve found the right pipe and your preferred kind of tobacco, take a step back in time to the Ottoman Empire. If you’re not sure how to assemble a hookah, you’re in luck– we’ve outlined it all for you below.
1. Clean the Hookah
Once you’ve left the smoke shop, it’s time to get to work putting together your new hookah.
Start with washing the hookah with water and a long, thin brush to reach inside hard-to-reach areas. Disassemble all parts of the hookah first, then wash every part except the hoses (they are not water-safe). Wipe dry with a clean towel.
2. Add Water and Optional Ice
Once it’s clean, you can add water to the vase of the hookah. Leave space for air to dispute the smoke. This will end up requiring enough water to cover one inch of the metal stem.
You can also add ice to the vase for an even more enjoyable experience. The cool air can feel nice!
If adding the ice makes the water level go over, be sure to drain out a little bit of the excess water.
3. How to Assemble a Hookah Shaft
Insert the shaft into the glass base of the hookah by lowering the shaft into the base and attaching it with the silicone piece to make it airtight. Making sure it’s attached properly will make it easier to pull the smoke.
4. Connect Hoses and Check Airflow
Connect the hoses into the dedicated, airtight holes on the side of the hookah shaft. If there are multiple hoses, you’ll need to attach all of them.
Before using, make sure the water levels are appropriate. Too much water can ruin the hoses if they’re not at the right level. If they’re too close to the hose inserts, drain out some water.
You’ll also need to check the airflow in the hookah. To do so, put your hand on the top of the hookah’s stem. This blocks air from entering the hookah.
Now, breathe in through the hose. How can you tell if it worked? You shouldn’t be able to pull any air through the hose during this test.
5. Add Metal Tra
Finally, don’t forget to add the metal tray on top of the hookah shaft. The tray is responsible for catching hot embers and extra tobacco while you’re smoking.
Enjoy Your Hookah
Once the hookah is assembled, we recommend giving it a test run. Once you light the embers and allow them to heat up, inhale on the hose to give it a try. It can take 1-2 minutes before the hookah really starts smoking properly.
