With a compound annual growth rate projected at more than 20%, CBD products have a bright future. Research has remained tentative on the full extent of CBD’s properties, however. While customers remain excited about this derivative of the cannabis plant, not all of them know what it’s for.
Needless to say, most customers don’t want to buy something they don’t understand. Maybe you find yourself in that camp now.
We’ll try to clear the air with some facts about CBD. Note that research remains in its early stages, due to the long legal history of the plant.
1. People Have Been Nailing Down Facts About CBD for a Long Time
While most people think CBD only got any attention after the 2014 Farm Act opened the door for legal consumption, scientists have been looking at CBD for a long time. The chemical was first discovered in 1940, with the first synthesis coming 23 years later.
Science has come a long way since then, with numerous studies assessing CBD’s effects. Some have also started looking at the effects it has in combination with other cannabis plant derivatives.
2. CBD Isn’t Alone
More than 80 cannabinoids have been identified. Some estimates place the number over 100. The marijuana plant has numerous potential benefits, and researchers have only scratched the surface of what it can do.
3. CBD Isn’t Just Oil
While the most popular CBD product remains CBD oil, other products have taken the world by storm. Common choices include edibles, water, and even dog treats.
One recent addition to the CBD family is lotion. CBD lotion benefits those who might want to treat skin inflammation or scars. While research remains early, anecdotal results have proven promising.
4. The FDA Has Approved CBD for Some Uses
Epidiolex, the first drug harnessing the benefits of CBD, treats seizures associated with certain health conditions. The study that led to its approval showed a significant reduction in seizures, including among treatment-resistant patients.
While Epidiolex is the first drug, it has led to more studies of CBD as a treatment for other health conditions. Who knows what CBD might be found to treat?
5. CBD’s Potency Doesn’t Change by Source
One persistent myth about CBD has to do with its potency. According to the myth, CBD from a marijuana plant works better than CBD from an industrial hemp plant.
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Different types of cannabis plants don’t have different types of CBD. Cannabidiol is cannabidiol, regardless of how it comes to exist.
6. CBD Works With Other Chemicals
While CBD alone has shown several promising properties, many of its properties improve when consumed alongside other things. The hemp plant’s derivatives have something called an entourage effect. This occurs when multiple chemicals work together to create a larger effect.
7. CBD Doesn’t Get You High
While some research points to potential effects against anxiety, CBD doesn’t cause a high. The highs associated with marijuana come from THC, a different cannabinoid.
The Evolution of CBD
These facts about CBD highlight the evolving body of data around the plant. As more people study its properties, people will learn more CBD facts.
